How Much Does Cat Litter Cost Per Month? The Real Cost Most Cat Owners Overlook

Many cat owners spend between $15 and $30 a month on cat litter, and some spend even more, especially in multi-cat households.

At first glance, some litters seem inexpensive because a bag doesn't cost much. But if you have to go through two or three bags every month, the total cost quickly adds up.

That's why the real value of a cat litter shouldn't be judged by the price per bag or price per pound. What really matters is how much litter you actually use—and how long it lasts.

Our bamboo cat litter is designed so that one 5.5-pound bag can last an average single-cat household for about a month. And there are two reasons why.

First, it uses much less litter.

The key isn't the weight of the bag—it's how much litter is needed to absorb each clump.

Let's do a simple comparison.

When 20 grams of liquid are poured into our bamboo cat litter, the finished clump weighs about 36.5 grams. Since 20 grams come from the liquid itself, only about 16.5 grams of litter are actually consumed.

Now compare that with a typical tofu cat litter. With the same 20 grams of liquid, the finished clump weighs around 59.5 grams, meaning nearly 40 grams of litter are used.

In other words, our litter uses only about 16 grams per clump, while some conventional tofu litters may use close to 40 grams. That's more than twice as much.

So with the same 5.5-pound bag, our litter can provide roughly the equivalent usage of two bags of ordinary litter.

Let's assume a cat urinates five times a day. At around 16 grams per clump, daily consumption would be about 80 grams. Over 30 days, that's approximately 2.4 kilograms, or about 5.5 pounds of litter.

In reality, most cats urinate fewer than five times a day, so for many single-cat households, one 5.5-pound bag lasting a month is completely achievable.

Another advantage is clumping strength. Plant-based litters are often criticized for weak clumps that break apart easily. We've worked to solve that problem, creating firm clumps that are easy to scoop and less likely to fall apart.

Second, odor control is just as important.

Using less litter is only part of the equation. Effective odor control is what truly makes long-lasting use possible.

Even if a litter is economical, if the litter box starts smelling after only a few days, you'll end up dumping everything and replacing it. That wastes both litter and money.

So if you want one bag to truly last a month, two things are essential:

  • Low litter consumption.
  • Strong odor control.

Only when both are achieved can a 5.5-pound bag realistically cover an entire month of use.

Of course, we're talking about total monthly consumption. As clumps are removed over time, you simply add fresh litter as needed instead of replacing the entire box.

At the end of the day, the real cost of cat litter isn't determined by the price on the package.

It's determined by how much litter you actually use—and how well it controls odor.

Saving litter is the foundation. Odor control is the key.

Don't compare price per bag.

Compare cost per month.
